IAMSP is proud to announce that it is making available its initial corporate vetting structure for companies wishing to work towards compliance with the evolving requirements associated with values and ethics to its Full and Associate members. This approach is the result of discussions with professionals within the security, ethics and audit communities under IAMSP leadership and coordiantion and has recently passed its first application in industry.
- The basis of this approach is in the use of a Capability and Maturity Model (CMM) often used to assess emerging programs and adapted by IAMSP. This approach was selected based on its clearly demonstrable and already-accepted structure that both tracks the status of a program but also how that program is evolving and maintained within an organization. The result is a method that is able to serve both as a “snapshot in time” and as a foundation for 12-24 month project planning as the standards are formalized and are gradually rolled into the industry.
- The result is an approach that meets the following criteria:
- Empirical in its basis and capable of being used by third party auditors
- Repeatable in its outcomes without significant training or familiarization
- Supportable in its conclusions in terms of the attestability of information
- Useful in terms of its provision of a foundation for continuous improvement.
- The advantages of this model is that it involves a level of continuous oversight and transparency that will assist clients in monitoring the status and progress of their service providers. Those service providers that achieve the baseline requirements and then continue to meet their mutually-agreed-upon commitments will be able to clearly defend use of the service provider from a due diligence perspective. These providers will be clearly identifiable through the list of companies that have achieved and can demonstrate that they continue to maintain the requirements to be adhered to.
- For our members, this will serve as a foundation piece in both the accountability and contracting processes. Those that use this approach will be able to clearly demonstrate to industry that they not only meet the requirements, but have committed (in a transparent and measurable way) to continue to meet and improve upon those requirements. They will be able to support those claims in a way that is free of many of the difficulties associated with subjective and similar systems.
- This approach represents a high-quality and highly-credible approach to the challenge of vetting companies in today’s maritime security industry. It is supported by principles adopted by communities of professional auditors and verification specialists. It provides the industry with a clearly-defined measuring stick that yields attestable and repeatable results from which it can manage risk. It does so using a methodology that supports the concepts of accountability and transparency within the industry without forcing the industry into a monopolistic system.
- Should you wish to discuss the alternatives regarding the use of this tool, please contact the President (amcdougall@iamsponline.org) via email.
- This marks another milestone in IAMSP’s efforts to provide its members and the maritime security industry with the tools necessary to demonstrate their efforts to achieve and maintain the highest of credible professional standards.
